【Course Objectives】

CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) is a corporate social contribution, and is often understood as something different from the main business, like a donation or voluntary work, but is it really so? On the other hand, some companies position CSR as "management itself" and look at various ways of involvement from the perspective of the company's value chain based on the meaning of existence of the company in society. What kind of differences are there?
What does "CSR management" mean to companies? And above all, what is the meaning for our society?
It is said that "integration" of profit for business and profit for society is difficult, but is that acceptable? What specifically is needed to integrate?
In our post-modern society where globalization and social divisions are progressing, CSR is business management itself and must be indispensable to society, but do you yourself have confidence that this is true, not just social leaders and business owners?
Based on "CSR management," which is both a company's relationship with society and a set of concrete practices, we will clarify the issues that companies should be responsible for in solving social issues in order to realize the public interest.
And, we will think about what is specifically needed in corporate management and business operations for that purpose, considering the processes: 1) How do we identify social issues? (problem identification) 2) How should we incorporate solving the identified social issues into the corporate missions of companies? (inclusion) and 3) The solution of specific social issues using organizational and technical skills (problem-solving).
With regard to the identification of social issues in particular, I would like to consider how companies will face this, based on the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) whose action began in 2016.

【Course Contents】

Through specific case studies of "CSR management", we will clarify: From what perspectives we should tackle problems; what approaches there are as specific measures; in particular in the processes of identification, inclusion, and problem-solving, what kind of issues are there as companies tackle social issues, and what actions are required to overcome them, etc. In addition, through this, we will clarify the significance of CSR management for companies and society.
As a summary of the course, we plan to provide opportunities to study and present specific cases according to students' areas of interest.
