【Course Objectives】

Through this seminar, students will understand the history of documentaries and how they work in our society as film journalism, and think about the methods of using documentaries to solve social problems and actual related methods.

【Course Contents】

We will take a bird's eye view of the past and present of traditional media such as newspapers and broadcasting, and then explore the challenges they face. Newspapers are drastically reducing their circulation, and television is rapidly losing its young viewers due to a decline in advertising. On the other hand, the function of monitoring power and the enhancement of local information are still in demand. I believe that journalism will make a comeback by highlighting social issues and stepping forward to take the initiative in solving them. At that time, collaboration between the journalism side and citizens will be essential. Our faculty members, who have been looking at mass media from the platform of online news, will highlight the challenges of journalism and explore the future of journalism with you. We will also examine the power of images to move people's hearts and minds by looking at a variety of programs and content, including documentaries, dramas, and animations. We will also examine the work and value of local journalism, focusing on Okinawa, which marks the 50th anniversary of the reversion of Japanese sovereignty, and the Great East Japan Earthquake.
As a summary, we will complete a proposal for audio content to be disseminated through media using the Internet and smartphones, keeping in mind that we are individual journalists.
