【Course Objectives】

Focusing on the internet, which is now the place for information and news, centered on young people, and videos, while considering changes in the media from the past to the present, students will think about our future society and its relationship with the media.
Media from which we obtain information is shifting from "legacy media" such as newspapers and television to net portals. As for viewing and listening to video, the younger generation is moving away from television, and shifting to distribution services, and devices are changing to smartphones and tablets. Local newspapers with detailed data collection networks face a decrease in sales, and there is a concern that the infrastructure for monitoring political power, collecting data, and discovering problems may be weakening.
Furthermore, in the internet space, fake news and hate speech overflows from social media and summary sites, and it is a time when media, that is expected to connect people, is creating division and exclusion.
While looking at these changes in the media situation, we will seek a better kind of media for our society. In addition, we will practice fact checking as a counter to fake news in class in a workshop format. Students will acquire better media literacy and will become able to proactively use media.

【Course Contents】

The media environment is changing dramatically with the advancement of the Internet. Especially with the advent of social networks, it was expected that the speed of information transmission and the power of diffusion would improve and develop society. However, fake news and disinformation are now circulating and spreading, misleading people and sometimes dividing the society. On the other hand, traditional mass media such as newspapers, TV, and magazines are losing users and profits, and the future of their traditional business model is becoming uncertain.
In this context, the attention economy (chasing page views with flashy headlines and content) that accompanies the media's shift to the Internet has led to a number of news reports that sometimes violate human rights or call for the social exclusion of minorities and foreigners. However, we still have a lot of work to do.
Nevertheless, we have to solve the problems that are piling up in our society through collective knowledge born from common understanding. In order to imagine and design a better society, we need to make the media environment healthy again. Through this exercise, we will explore the realization of a new and better public media space.
