【Course Objectives】

The purpose of this course is to prepare MA students to conduct independent research in language and communication studies. Specifically, students will learn to (a) critically evaluate extant literature, (b) formulate research questions, (c) collect data, and (d) publish their findings in the form of academic papers.

【Course Contents】

Through lectures and hands-on sessions, students will learn basic knowledge and skills required for conducting MA research in the field of language and communication studies. Topics covered will include validity and reliability, different kinds of scales (ratio, interval, ordinal, and nominal), descriptive statistics (means, variances, standard deviations, kurtosis, and skewness), normal distribution, deviation values, inferential statistics, effect sizes, and reference management and citations.
