【Course Objectives】

The goal of this seminar is to review the fundamental knowledge of linguistics, and to create and reinforce the foundation for furthering understanding of content introduced in master’s program classes at this university.

【Course Contents】

How has linguistics evolved from its origination as a budding field of study within the framework of semiotics in the early 20th century into the comprehensive study that defines that framework? How has the advent of linguistics changed (or not changed) the system of knowledge of traditional human science cultivated in the Western world? In addition, how does linguistics currently fit into the system of knowledge of contemporary human science? Students will tackle problems of this nature as they consider the relationships between linguistics and various, closely related fields in the humanities and social sciences to gain a clearer view of the epistemology of linguistics. Classes are structured around students taking turns reading texts and giving reports.
