【Course Objectives】

To understand the evolution of translator and interpreter training as well as main concepts, research findings and issues in contemporary translator and interpreter education in Japan and abroad.

【Course Contents】

To review the evolution of translator and interpreter training and examine various aspects of systematic translator and interpreter training at higher education in the world. Particular attention is paid to the underlying theories, student selection criteria, curricula, teaching methods and assessment issues. In light of the practice of teaching translation and interpreting in Japan, discussion is also aimed at the relations between translator and interpreter training and language education and at the structure and teaching methods unique to translator and interpreter training in Japan. Further, translation and interpreting literacy as part of the general education curriculum for undergraduate students is examined.
