【Course Objectives】

This is an introductory course of the Conference Interpreting Program.
The objectives of this course are for students to:
1) understand the basic concepts and modes of interpreting;
2) develop basic skills that support all modes of interpreting, such as active listening and content analysis;
3) learn how to perform consecutive interpreting between Japanese and English in both directions on general (non-technical) topics;
4) acquire note-taking skills to support consecutive interpreting; and
5) build up vocabulary on a range of topics.

【Course Contents】

The bulk of this course will be hands-on, practical exercises. Students will be asked to actively engage in exercises in each class, beginning with basic skills for interpreting such as active listening, then moving on to consecutive interpreting with and without notes. After each exercise, there will be time taken for constructive feedback and discussion, with everyone participating.

Students will need to prepare for the topics to be covered in each class (by researching and building glossaries), record and reflect on their in-class performance, and also practice individually or in a group outside of class. The speeches/dialogues used will begin at entry level and progress to intermediate level, covering general (non-technical) topics.
