Christianization is an interesting phenomenon for cultural anthropologists, who investigate both the universality and the specificity of human culture and society. Promoters of Christianity, in the course of centuries of missionizing activities all over the world, have had to confront the question of how to transmit their universal doctrine to each local society. At the same time, the Christian way of thinking has offered a strong intellectual basis for the modern European scholarship.
The objective of this course is to present a perspective on the theme of sociocultural change in local societies before and after Christianization.
Reading books and articles about sociocultural change and Bible translation, students acquire insights on transformation of person, custom and signs before-after Christianization.

文化、社会の普遍性および固有性の学問である文化人類学にとって、キリスト教化は興味深い事象である。数世紀にわたるグローバルな宣教活動を通じて各地に信徒を獲得してきたキリスト教は、普遍の教義を多様な地域社会へいかに伝道するかという問いとつねに対峙しなければならなかった。同時にキリスト教的な思考様式は、近代ヨーロッパの学問そのものの根本を形成してきた当事者でもある。
この授業では、キリスト教が文化人類学者の研究をいかに方向付け、また時にいかなる制約を課してきたかを紐解いた上で、実際にキリスト教化という現象がいかに論じられてきたかを概観する。その研究動向を踏まえつつ、キリスト教化とそれが地域社会にもたらす文化、社会の変容といかに向き合うべきかという問いに対する展望を得る。
