【Course Objectives】

Social and cultural anthropology of nature emerged around 1990 as "ontological" anthropology. The trend eventually led gently to another trend, multispecies anthropology in the 2010s. In this class, we will take up an ethnography of "ontological" anthropology and reflect on what the ontological turn in anthropology has been. This will develop the understanding of the perspectives and theories.

【Course Contents】

In this course, we will be reading "Soul Hunters" written by Danish anthropologist Rane Willerslev in a roundtable discussion. It is an ethnography based on fieldwork he conducted as a hunter himself with the Yukagir, a group of hunters living in Siberia. We will develop an understanding of topics such as animism, hunting practices, body and soul, animal personhood, post-socialism, and ""taking others seriously"".
