This class aims to explore how history has been represented in drama. The aim will vary depending on how much experience students have in reading plays written in English. If the students have no difficulty reading and understanding the dialogue as it appears in plays, we compare different methods in which playwrights have attempted to reflect their views of history in their work. On the other hand, if this is the first time students read a play in English, we will concentrate on one or two plays and the aim will be mainly to understand the play accurately.
Just as the aim of the course, the content will depend on the students' experience. In the case of the experienced students, the lecture will be given on the method employed by the selected playwrights in representing history, followed by a discussion. In the case of students with less experience, we will read the play together in class and discuss its meaning each week. After we finish reading the play we will go on to discuss the relation between the historical facts and the literary/dramatic representation. .
※Please refer to Japanese Page for details including evaluations, textbooks and others.
