In the 2024 seminar, we will discuss how religion influences politics in global society. Since the 2010s, exclusive nationalism has been on the rise in all parts of the world, mainly among people who have been exhausted by globalization. Religion is the root of such nationalism. However, this religion is not a traditional religion consisting of a doctrine, a founder, and a cult. Rather, they are the source of a particular ethnic identity. For example, Europe's far-right parties that advocate Judeo-Christian values, Russian Orthodoxy for President Putin, Christian evangelicalism for former President Trump, Hindu supremacy for Prime Minister Modi, and conservative Islamism for President Erdogan. Furthermore, even in Japan, where most people pride themselves on being "non-religious", in recent years there have been a number of groups that support the traditional Shinto worldview and have developed conservative political movements. In this seminar, we will clarify the new state of religion and politics in global society by reading a variety of papers.
In this seminar, participants will select papers close to their own research interests, prepare an abstract, and present it. The goal is to deepen the understanding of the relationship between politics and religion. At the same time, they will acquire the ability to read literature accurately and to conduct research necessary to write their own papers. In particular, students, in the spring semester, will submit two reflection papers as assignments in order to demonstrate their understanding of the literature and to formulate their own problems.

2024年度の演習では、グローバル社会において宗教が政治にどのような影響を及ぼしているのかについて議論する。2010年代以降、世界のあらゆるところで、グローバル化によって疲弊した層を中心に排他的なナショナリズムが勃興している。そうしたナショナリズムの根源には宗教がある。とはいえ、この宗教は、教義・教祖・教団からなる伝統的な宗教ではない。むしろ、特定の民族のアイデンティティの源泉となるようなものである。例をあげるとすれば、ユダヤ・キリスト教的な価値観を掲げる欧州の極右政党、プーチン大統領にとってのロシア正教、トランプ元大統領にとってのキリスト教福音主義、モーディー首相にとってのヒンドゥー至上主義、エルドアン大統領にとっての保守的なイスラム主義。また、大部分が「無宗教」を自負する日本においても、近年、伝統的な神道の世界観を支持し、保守的な政治運動を展開するグループも少なくない。本演習では、こうしたグローバル社会における新しい宗教と政治のあり方を多様な論文を読み解くことで明らかにしていく。

本演習では、参加者が自身の関心に近い論文を選び、要旨を作成し、発表する。政治と宗教の関係についての考察を深めると同時に、文献の正確な読解力ならびに参加者自身のレポートや論文執筆に必要な調査能力を身につけることも目標としたい。とりわけ、春学期は課題としてリフレクションペーパーを2回提出する。これは文献の理解を示すためであり、またそこから自らの問題を設定していくためである。
In this seminar, participants will select papers close to their own research interests, prepare an abstract, and present it. The goal is to deepen the understanding of the relationship between politics and religion.
