Starting in Japan, we will examine the history of Christianity in Asia to identify political, social, and cultural issues in that history and deepen our understanding of them. Furthermore, we will discover the importance of a gender perspective for the historical study of Christianity in Asia.
During the first half of the course, we will read through literature (in both Japanese and English) on the history of Christianity in Asia, especially in Japan, and identify problematic issues in each phase of the indigenization process of Christianity. For this purpose, you will form four groups (1. History of Catholic missionary work up to the late Tokugawa era; 2. History of Protestant missionary work in the Meiji and Taisho eras; 3. Christianity during the war; 4. Post-war Christianity) in the first class which introduce the literature chosen by the group and raise problems based on the literature. Then, each of you will find a individual research topic according to your interest, carry out research and analysis during the semester, and make a presentation on your findings in the second half of the course. Throughout the course, time for discussion will be arranged after each presentation. We will also watch movies and visit Christian organizations related to the content of the class. We will be deciding the presentation schedule in the first class, so make sure to attend. You should decide which era (see above) you would like to study by the first class.

日本をはじめ、アジアにおけるキリスト教の歴史を省みて，そこに認められる政治・社会・文化的諸課題についての論点を整理し，理解を深める。さらにはアジア・キリスト教史研究におけるジェンダーの視点の重要性に気づく。
Starting in Japan, we will examine the history of Christianity in Asia to identify political, social, and cultural issues in that history and deepen our understanding of them. Furthermore, we will discover the importance of a gender perspective for the historical study of Christianity in Asia.
前半では，アジア，とりわけ日本キリスト教史に関する文献（日本語・英語）を講読し，キリスト教の土着化の過程における諸課題を時期毎に明らかにする。2回目以降，履修者は4つのグループ（1．幕末期までのカトリック宣教史，2．明治・大正期のプロテスタント宣教史，3．戦時中のキリスト教， 4．戦後のキリスト教）に分かれ，グループ毎に担当する文献の紹介及びその文献に基づいた問題提起を行う。その後，各自の関心に応じて一つの研究テーマを見つけ出し，学期中に調査・分析を行って，コースの後半でその成果を発表する。また全コースを通して発表後に討議の時間を設ける。授業で扱った内容と関連する映画の鑑賞やキリスト教系施設などの見学も行う。初回の授業で発表の日程を決めるので，必ず出席すること。
履修者は，第1回の授業までに担当したい時期（上記参照）について決めておく。
