【Course Objectives】

The focus of this lecture is the relationship between society and religion in today's world, which will be explored through the theoretical frameworks of "religious revivals" and "secularization." In the past, secularization theories were developed and many believed that religion would lose its significance in the modern world. However, recent religious revivals have challenged this notion, and religion remains an important issue even in the 21st century. We will examine how religions have impacted social issues in modern and contemporary history from various perspectives, with a particular focus on cases in the United States. By studying these cases, students will gain a better understanding of how to coexist with diverse individuals as citizens in modern society.

【Course Contents】

In the first part of the class, we will explore various cases such as the rise of evangelicalism and evangelicals' engagement in the public sphere, the widespread popularity of American occult and spiritual culture, and the growth of the Muslim population. Additionally, we will discuss the concept of non-religion as an alternative form of religiosity in today's world. During the second part of the class, we will focus on the relationship between race and religion in the United States, using it as a case study to examine the interplay between religion and social issues.
