【Course Objectives】

The polytheistic religions in Asia, represented by Hinduism, Buddhism and Japanese Shintoism, are often contrasted to the Abrahamic religions as monotheism. This course aims to consider the states of cross-cultural exchange among different religions in the global community, understanding the various concepts of gods/deities and the perspectives of the world, and the aspect of syncretism in Asian religions.

【Course Contents】

In this course, we will, mainly focusing on Hinduism, Buddhism and Shintoism, understand the basic theories and characteristics of Asian religions, and consider the relation between gods/deities and human beings in the polytheistic societies. Furthermore, based on the concept of “syncretism” which has been reconsidered in religious studies and cultural anthropology recently, we will illustrate the various cases of the interaction and acceptance of Asian religions.
