【Course Objectives】

In this lecture, we will explore how students should approach the issues faced by contemporary Iran and the Middle East, examining the methods and fundamental knowledge starting from the most basic level of Iranian modern history, geography and Middle Eastern area studies.

【Course Contents】

Since the Islamic Revolution of 1979, the relationship between Iran and the United States has been one of the aporias of modern history since the late Cold War, often deepening in complexity. Moreover, its impact extends beyond bilateral relations, deeply relating to the economy and security of the world, including Japan.
After the 2020 U.S. presidential election, the Biden administration took office in January 2021. Since then, there have been significant developments in the Middle East situation, starting with the establishment of the Taliban's effective administration following the U.S. military withdrawal from Afghanistan in August, the outbreak of war between Russia and Ukraine in February 2022, and the preemptive attack by Hamas and the subsequent Gaza War on October 7th of the previous year. To deeply contemplate these current situations from a multifaceted perspective, it is essential to understand Iran, which occupies a significant position among the major powers in the Middle East.
With the U.S. presidential election approaching in November, this lecture will begin by presenting the most basic knowledge about Iran and the Middle East region, item by item, while intermittently incorporating timely commentary. In the latter half, we will approach the real image of contemporary Iranian society through Iranian films and visual records.
