This lecture examines a topic of nutrition and health in the industrialized Britain, particularly focusing on a public/philanthropic project of providing nutritious supplements for pregnant women in South Wales in the 1930s.
This lecture studies a public/philanthropic project of providing nutritious supplements for pregnant women in South Wales in the 1930s. This project was conducted by the National Birthday Trust Fund, a philanthropic body run by wealthy women, with cooperation of the Commissioners for the Special Areas Act 1934. In doing so, it shows how to conduct a historical research through reading i)secondary materials, reference books and primary materials including official documents, journals and newspapers, and unpublished sources.

産業革命下のイギリス社会における栄養と健康の問題を、1930年代南ウェールズの炭鉱地区で行われた妊娠期の女性への栄養補助事業から探求する。
This lecture examines a topic of nutrition and health in the industrialized Britain, particularly focusing on a public/philanthropic project of providing nutritious supplements for pregnant women in South Wales in the 1930s.
この授業では、1930年代南ウェールズの炭鉱地区で行われた妊娠期の女性への栄養補助事業を主題とする。これは、ナショナル・バースデイ・トラスト・ファンドという富裕な女性たちが運営する慈善団体が、失業特別地域監督庁と呼ばれる公的機関と連携の上実施した事業である。授業に際しては、①先行研究文献（英語）、②事典等の補助的な参考書、③公的文書・雑誌・未刊行史料などの一次史料の３種類の文献・史料を実際に示し、具体的な研究作業のあり方を提示する。

この授業では、英語で書かれた研究文献や一次史料を、和訳をすることなく原語のまま（そのまま英語で）用います。そのため、授業内容を理解するためには、西洋史・イギリス史の研究に必要となる一定の英語読解能力が必要です。歴史の知識を教授するタイプの一般的な講義ではなく、実際の研究作業を原語で見ることを主眼とした、専門性の高い授業です。毎回の授業後に課される小レポートも、そうした高い専門性を前提とした課題に答えてもらうことになります。
配布物はCanvas LMSでデジタル配布をしますので、PCを持参してください。
