The maritime world not only separates some regions from other regions but also connects one from others. This course aims to get a multiple and flexible cognition from the maritime world history.
“Indian Ocean World” that is to say “Maritime Asian World” has been an important hub connecting Asia, the Islamic World (so-called Middle East), and the Mediterranean World and the Maritime Road (so-called Ceramic Road) between East-West Eurasia. At the same time, a major maritime world contains some small maritime worlds including various cultural spheres. This course deals with the origin, expansion, and interaction of the Maritime Asian World, its history, and culture.

国家・王朝断代史になりがちになってしまう東西ユーラシアの歴史を、東方アジア海域（南シナ海・東シナ海海域）、インド洋海域、地中海海域という異なる海域世界の連鎖と交流という視点から捉えなおし、「隔てる」と同時に「結びつける」という海域世界が果たした役割を考慮しつつ、東西ユーラシアの「歴史」を広域的・多元的な視点から柔軟に捉えられるようになること。
また、文化や価値観が異なると同時に同じ環境や社会を共有する「広域文化圏」「広域社会」という視点から現在の自分が置かれた環境や社会について考えてみてください。

東アジア海域から地中海東海域に及ぶ広義の「インド洋海域世界」或いは「海域アジア世界」は古来からアジア世界、イスラーム世界、地中海世界を結ぶ要であり、東西ユーラシアを結ぶ「海の道」でした。また、大きな海域世界はよりミクロな海域世界が重層的に連鎖して形成され、様々な次元の文化圏が交わる境域世界でもありました。本講義ではインド洋東海域世界・両シナ海海域世界（＝東部アジア海域世界）およびインド洋西海域世界～地中海海域世界の成り立ちと歴史的展開、その構成要素となる各海域世界の交流について解説をおこないます。
