【Course Objectives】

This course provides an overview of the urbanization process that has emerged in West and South Asia and deepens the understanding of the phenomenon of living in densely populated cities, which has been taken for granted for most of us today.

【Course Contents】

In West and South Asia, the first cities emerged in the history of humankind. In this course, the lecturer will introduce cultures, subsistence, and social organizations from the Neolithic period when farming and pastoralism were established, the Chalcolithic period when urbanization proceeded, to the Bronze Age when Mesopotamian and Indus Valley civilizations emerged, and the Iron Age when empires appeared. This course will deal with the latest findings and the excavations in which the lecturer has been directly involved. Through this course, the lecturer will give a general overview of the urbanization process and cities' roles in societies.
