【Course Objectives】

1. To understand how Jews transformed the shapes of beliefs and knowledge through repeated migrations throughout their history.
2. To be able to develope one's thought on the characteristics of the philosophy of Enlightenment and of the Modern European Society through the history of the Modernization of jewish societies.

【Course Contents】

Through the history of the dispersed Jews in the European countries, this class will study how their ideas, culture, and religion were subdivided and transformed as they were influenced by the social institutions and culture of the regions in which they lived. Jews have inhabited Europe since Roman times, and in the Middle Ages, they were divided into two communities with different characteristics. Decades after, the "Modernization" of the Jewish people radically changes the position of Jews in European society. We will learn about the phenomenon known as the "assimilation" of Jews in Europe, while learning about the Emancipation of the Jews in French Revolution and the Jewish Reform movement that spread from Germany. While deepening our knowledge of these historical cases, we will also consider that by taking up a group of minority as a subject of study, the periodizations of the occidental history can be multilayered and the narrative of history can be inside out.
Students will be expected to actively participate in the class, as there will be assignments such as reading historical documents.
