【Course Objectives】

This course aims to offer you an opportunity to (1) understand the variety of regional societies of Japan, (2) acquire basic knowledge of the relationship of lives and Buddhism in local societies by focusing on medieval Hokuriku region, (3) learn the perspectives for understanding premodern Japan through the research overseas.

【Course Contents】

In this course you will study the history of medieval Japan, a period when the power of state was distributed and religion played an extremely important role. This course investigates the history of Hokuriku region by focusing on Buddhism and the influence of state power. The first half of the course overviews the Hokuriku region through perspectives of politics, economy, and Buddhism. The second half provides you the opportunity to read the various historical sources related to the first half. You also have the opportunity to explore the characteristics of premodern local society of Japan through reading the research of western and Chinese academia with guidance in Japanese.
