【Course Objectives】

In this course, students will learn how to examine the relationship between Kabuki and early modern Japanese history, focusing on the characteristics of Edo Kabuki and the way in which it developed in the provinces.

【Course Contents】

This course lectures the historical significance of kabuki culture in early modern Japanese history, focusing on the relationship between the shogunate and the actors, the relationship between the actors and their audiences and patrons, the people behind the scenes who support kabuki performances, and examples of local performances by actors.
