【Course Objectives】

The purpose of this lecture is to examine modern Okinawa history from the perspective of women's history and gender history, and to deepen understanding of Okinawa's modern history.

【Course Contents】

The Ryukyu Kingdom was brought under Japanese control by the Ryukyu Annexation, and began its modern history as Okinawa Prefecture. The Okinawan people were forced to become Japanese, and Ryukyuan culture was rejected by Japan as undesirable. However, the society and culture that originated from the Ryukyu Kingdom never completely disappeared. On the other hand, Japanese government gave women education, which became an opportunity for women to express themselves and liberate themselves, but the lives of Okinawan women and the movements for self-expression and self-liberation also had characteristics that originated in the Ryukyu Kingdom period.
In addition, after the harsh Battle of Okinawa, the U.S. military rule that lasted until 1972 left a further mark on the history of Okinawan women. The Battle of Okinawa and U.S. military rule caused tremendous damage to women, but on the other hand, they also led to women developing a critical perspective on Japan and Okinawan society. Under these circumstances, Okinawa's distinctive feminist movement emerged.
This lecture will focus on the characteristics of Okinawan women's experiences, as outlined above.
