【Course Objectives】

Using the Satsuma clan, Kagoshima Prefecture, and the Shimadzu family as the main examples during Japan's early modern transition period (centering on the 19th century), we will understand what changes were brought about in the inevitable battles that took place during the era of change.

【Course Contents】

In regions threatened by external pressure, they embarked on projects not only to improve their military equipment, such as cannons and ships, but also to foster industry and stabilize the lives of the people. Using the Anglo-Satsuma War, Boshin War, and Seinan War as case studies, we will consider what kind of changes occurred and how the changes in the regions related to the overall changes in the Japanese transition period. The case of Princess Atsuhime(Tenshouin) , who married into the Tokugawa family from the Shimadzu family, will also be dealt with.
