【Course Objectives】

Various historical materials are used when researching history. In recent years, there has been significant progress in research that deals not only with written historical materials, but also with non-written historical materials such as physical materials, paintings, videos, and even landscapes. However, history books remain one of the most important historical sources in historical studies. This lecture focuses on historical books as historical materials, and aims to help students learn how to approach historical books by understanding their origins and historical background.

【Course Contents】

In order to understand history books as historical materials, it is necessary to pay attention to how they were created, how they were read, and how they were passed down to the present day. Issues include the purpose of compilation, the compilation process, the original text, and the lineage of manuscripts. In this class, we will consider this issue with a particular focus on the Nihon Shoki. At the same time, we will also discuss related issues, allowing you to understand from multiple perspectives how history books should be treated as historical materials.
