【Course Objectives】

In Issues in Contemporary Education 2, we will deepen our understanding of current educational issues centered on the creative process in artistic activities from the perspective of cognitive psychology. In particular, the current state of artistic creation in higher education and around the world, particularly the challenges of STEAM education in various countries (educational systems, educational content, relationship with various subjects, educational methods, etc.) will be objectively examined and discussed from the perspective of critical thinking.

【Course Contents】

In recent years, it has been noted that understanding through the arts as STEAM education promotes learning in diverse fields. STEAM is an educational concept that combines five acronyms: Science、Technology、Engineering、Art、Mathematics. This class will approach understanding the process of artistic activity by discussing how the mechanism of artistic creativity functions in STEAM education and opens up educational possibilities.
In the first half of the class, through lectures, literature review, exercises, and discussions, the creative process in artistic activities will be examined from the methods and perspectives of cognitive science. In particular, specific exercises will be conducted on the approaches from the level of perception and cognition involved in creative activities. In the latter half of the course, discussion will be based on presentations of research based on each student's own interests and concerns. Preliminary research, preparation of materials, presentation, and discussion will be the evaluation criteria. In class, students' active participation and comments will be evaluated, and when writing assignment reports, students will be asked to analyze the research from their own perspectives.
