【Course Objectives】

While acquiring fundamental knowledge centered on an outline of the academic field of Japanese linguistics, students will become able to think academically about everyday phenomena in language.

【Course Contents】

The course will provide a bird’s-eye image of Japanese linguistics overall, and, for specific academic fields, will explain what it means to target Japanese as a subject of study, what kind of knowledge is needed to analyze Japanese language academically, and what it means to analyze Japanese academically. In Japanese linguistics, research has traditionally been conducted from perspectives including sounds, grammar, notation, and vocabulary. As textbooks are, in the end, indexes that survey the whole of an academic field from a high level, the class will deal with content not in textbooks, as appropriate. In the lectures, students will study matters related to Modern Japanese from a variety of perspectives.
