【Course Objectives】

(1) To be able to understand Chinese writing as an ancient Chinese language (i.e., a foreign language) and its basic grammatical structure.
(2) To be able to add punctuation marks to Chinese texts by oneself.
(3) To be able to read actual Japanese Kanbun texts with a linguistic knowledge of Kanbun.
(4) Learn the basics of the rules of Chinese poetry and how to appreciate Chinese poetry analytically.

【Course Contents】

Japanese classical literature has had a close relationship with Chinese literature. You have probably read such Chinese texts in the way of Kundoku. In this lecture, we will learn the grammatical structure of the Chinese writing system so that you can add punctuation marks to Chinese texts by yourself.

Based on the linguistic knowledge of Chinese texts, students will actually read and understand Chinese texts that have had a strong influence on the history of Japanese classical literature.

Students will also learn the basic rules of Chinese poetry and appreciate poems composed by Japanese poets.
