【Course Objectives】

This course is an introduction to the language and sensibility of the ancient Greeks. Ancient Greek civilization is one of the sources of Western civilization. By learning about the language and sensibility of the ancient Greeks, students will also be able to learn about one of the origins of modern Western civilization.

The language and sensibility of the ancient Greeks were very different from those of us. One of the main reasons for this is the difference in time and another is geographical differences. You will be able to explain them, paying attention to these differences. Furthermore, you will be able to describe the differences between the various cultures as precisely as possible, paying attention to period and geographical differences.

No knowledge of ancient Greek is necessary to take this course. Knowledge of other foreign languages is also not required (except English).

【Course Contents】

I. Contents covered in class

The course introduces the students to passages from ancient Greek literature in translation, explaining what sensibility the ancient Greeks reflected in their writings and what language they used to describe them. The works covered are mainly mythology, history, philosophy and drama. However, it is sometimes difficult to understand these literary works by reading them alone. In such cases, the learning of the cultural history may help understanding, so we will also give a lecture on cultural history.

We will introduce some of the most famous ancient Greek works, such as Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey, Sopocles’ Oedipus Rex and Plato’s philosophical works. We will encourage students to read works of interest.

II. How to proceed with the class

A quiz will be given at the beginning of class (except for the first class), after which the class will be conducted in the form of a lecture.
