【Course Objectives】

The aim of this course is for students to enjoy reading the literature from different perspectives through comparing some modern English translations of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. And they will not only deepen their understanding of the vocabulary and expressions used in the translations, but also of the social, cultural, historical and ethical background on which the poem rests.

【Course Contents】

14th-century English poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight has modern English translations. They can be regarded as "the interpretative works of translators" in the sense that the translators reflect their own interpretation of the work in their renderings. Comparing some translations of the poem, student will learn how the translators read the work and what problems in interpretation or translation of the work there are. Where there are more than one interpretation, the point will be discussed in class with a critical viewpoint to deepen our understanding of both the translators' readings and the work itself.

The progress of the class may be subject to change due to class conditions and other factors.
