【Course Objectives】

As outlined in the curriculum map, this seminar aims at cultivating students' reading comprehension skills in order to form a solid basis for their future studies, while at the same time providing instructions on how to make a coherent presentation of their literary analyses in both oral and written discussions. It is also hoped that students experience the pleasure of reading literature through attending this introductory course on the subject.

【Course Contents】

When reading newspaper articles, we sometimes encounter the term 'Orwellian'. In this seminar, students will read some of the works of the author to whom this adjective refers, George Orwell. Orwell lived through the era of totalitarianism and war, and his early twentieth-century writings remain highly relevant today, as evidenced by the fact that journalists still refer to him. In this seminar, we hope that students will enjoy the experience of deep thinking through literature.
In this seminar, students must give at least one oral presentation and regularly participate in class activities. Additionally, students are required to read Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949) in Japanese and write a term paper.
