【Course Objectives】

This course is intended to share insight into literary works by British and American writers. The emphasis lies on discussing each piece in terms of such aspects as theme, plot, character, form and historical/social context.

【Course Contents】

Most of the time, an appointed group of four to five students will do some research and prepare handouts, presenting summary and background information, pointing out notable elements, and raising questions to the class. The other participants are expected to make comments based on the presentation, or add new perspective(s).
In addition to in-class readings, students are assigned William Golding's Lord of the Flies and required to hand in a 2000-3000 character eassy in Japanese as the midterm report.
