【Course Objectives】

As outlined in the curriculum map, this seminar is intended to familiarize students with the basic terms and methods of literary analysis. Students will learn how to locate a given text in its historical and cultural context and practice in producing a coherent argument that examines a literary text from a specific thematic perspective by composing a term paper.

【Course Contents】

This seminar focuses on the short stories of E. M. Forster, a prominent British author and intellectual of the twentieth century. Forster is best known for his novels, including A Room with a View (1908) and Howards End (1910), both of which were adapted into films in the 1990s. He also wrote A Passage to India (1924), which depicts the encounter between England and India. In addition to his novels, though, Forster wrote several excellent short stories, too. In this seminar, students will examine some of these stories. They will learn various literary techniques while exploring the author's humanist thoughts.
