【Course Objectives】

Through a close reading of a literary text, students in this course will improve their English reading skill and think about the significance of Bildungsroman in America.

【Course Contents】

Literary works, classified as Bildungsroman or coming-of-age story, have still attracted a large number of readers all over the world, especially in America. In this course, we will consider the cultural and social significance of such works in a nation of people fascinated by the realization of the American dream "from Rags to Riches" through a close reading of Horatio Alger's Ragged Dick (1867).
At the same time, we will analyze the literary text with paying attention to the themes, structure, style, motifs and rhetoric.
