【Course Objectives】

The objective of this course is to provide a detailed introduction to Modernist drama, and focus specifically on the most significant shorter plays of one of the twentieth century’s most influential playwrights - Samuel Beckett (1906-1989). Further course objectives include improvement in discussion skills, and the acquisition of a wider analytical vocabulary.

【Course Contents】

This course will provide a comprehensive introduction to Modernist drama, and focus particularly on Samuel Beckett’s shorter minimalist works for the theatre. Beckett’s intensely lyrical poetic language and exceptionally powerful stage images in his shorter dramas will be discussed in the wider context of the earlier English and European literary traditions. Textual and in-class video study of these major twentieth century plays will enable students to become familiar with the experimental characters, style, and language of a diverse range of works by one of the greatest postwar playwrights.
