The objective of this course is that students will acquire,
1. abilities to read Early Modern English and basic knowledge of theatre in Early Modern England,
2. skills of critical reading and interpreting literary texts
by close reading of Shakespeare's comedy, As You Like It (1599).
In this course, students will closely read the original text of As You Like It (1599), one of Shakespeare's comedies, in a seminar style. In each class, assigned students will have a presentation about the text, and all students should participate a discussion after that.
In As You Like It, Rosalind, who has escaped to the Forest of Arden, disguises herself as a man and wins the heart of Orlando by teaching him how to woo her in love. Through a reading of the text, students will consider the significance of the topos of the forest in early modern England and the subversion in gender in the play caused by the cross-dressing motif.

本科目は、シェイクスピアの喜劇である『お気に召すまま』を精読し、1. 初期近代英語を読む英語読解力と、初期近代イングランド演劇に関する基本的な知識、2. 文学作品を批評的に読解し、解釈する力を身につけることを目標とする。

シェイクスピアによる喜劇のひとつである『お気に召すまま』（1599）の原文を、演習形式で精読する。毎回、担当者によるテキスト該当箇所の内容と議論のポイントについての発表を行うとともに、受講者全員でディスカッションを行う。
『お気に召すまま』は、アーデンの森に逃れたロザリンドが、男装して意中のオーランドに恋の指南をすることで、最終的に彼を勝ち取る顛末を描いた喜劇である。受講者は、本作品の読解を通して、初期近代イングランドにおける森というトポスの持つ意味と、異性装というモチーフによって生じている、この劇におけるジェンダー的な転倒について考える。
