Objectives of this course are to learn basics of English historical linguistics and to acquire a deeper understanding of features and peculiarities of the English language as well as that of the history and culture of the English-speaking world.
We will read a book dealing with various aspects of the history of the English language and have presentations and discussions on the issues related to the topic of each class. Through this process, students will acquire general knowledge on the history of English as well as basic research skills in the field. Apart from the history of English itself, issues related to the following are also addressed during the course: Old and Middle English language and literature, etymology, comparative linguistics, the history and culture of the English-speaking world.

英語史の基礎知識を身につけながら、英語の特質や、英語の語源、比較言語学、英語圏の歴史や文化についての造詣を深める。
Objectives of this course are to learn basics of English historical linguistics and to acquire a deeper understanding of features and peculiarities of the English language as well as that of the history and culture of the English-speaking world.
英語史を中心的なテーマとして扱った書籍（英文）を講読しながら、英語史と関連する諸問題について、受講者の発表やそれに基づくディスカッションを通じて造詣を深めるとともに、英語学（特に英語史）分野における研究の基礎を身につける。扱う内容は、英語の歴史そのものに加え、古英語、中英語、英語語源学、比較言語学、英国史、英国文化史など多岐にわたる。
We will read a book dealing with various aspects of the history of the English language and have presentations and discussions on the issues related to the topic of each class. Through this process, students will acquire general knowledge on the history of English as well as basic research skills in the field.
