【Course Objectives】

This course aims to deepen our understanding of the nineteenth-century English novel by reading Thomas Hardy's masterpiece The Mayor of Casterbridge(1886).

【Course Contents】

Thomas Hardy (1840-1928) is well known as a representative novelist in the late Victorian period. One of his major novels, The Mayor of Casterbridge(1886), is an attempt to recreate his home town by researching its history. By reading this novel, we will try to have a deeper understanding of the society and customs of the English countryside in the nineteenth century. Also by following the narrative of the very eventful life of Henchard, the main character, we will consider some profound questions like the meaning of life or love, along with Hardy's particular views of them. Even though the setting and age in the novel are distant from ours, there must be universal insights into life that appeal to us today, and we will try to explore them.
