【Course Objectives】

1 Teach students how to interpret the meaning of specific lines and scenes from courtroom drama while reading the scripts in both English and Japanese.
2 Enable students to consider what interpretations theater producers and film directors drew from the text based on what is being shown to the audience during specific scenes when viewing theater productions or film adaptations of courtroom drama.

【Course Contents】

The theme of this course is “Reading British and American Courtroom Drama and its Film Adaptations. ” The purpose of this course is to examine the courtroom drama and film adaptation in Britain and the United States. Attention should be paid to how the trial is being dramaized. Through the first semester, students who are completely unfamiliar with drama will gain a new perspective on drama and how to interpret it (drama literacy) by focusing on drama characters and plot patterns. At the beginning of each lecture, students will watch the film adaptations of each courtroom drama to deepen their perspectives on film (film literacy). In this course I will deal with five courtroom dramas: Agatha Christie's Witness for the Prosecution (1953), Reginald Rose's Twelve Angry Men (1955), Koki Mitani's Twelve Gentle Japanese(1990), a Japanese appropriation of Twelve Angry Men, Aaron Sorkin's A Few Good Men (1989) and David Hare’s Denial. I will give a lecture on each play by comparing the original and its film adapatation. After each lecture, I will upload the handouts of each lecture at Canvas LMS.
