【Course Objectives】

This course aims to develop students' understandings of US-Japan cultural differences and various issues of globalization of American culture.

【Course Contents】

In this course, we will discuss the ways in which Mark Twain, one of the representative American authors, has been perceived in Japan for more than a century since Meiji era. Twain's literature is in a way an embodiment of American culture, and in particular his introduction of the American issues of race, space, and vernacular languages made it difficult for many Japanese to understand the essence of his literature. As a result, Twain's literature was sometimes distorted and even rejected in accordance with the norms of contemporary Japanese society. In this course, to understand the "Japanization" of Mark Twain, we will closely examine Japanese society and popular culture, particularly the US-Japan cultural relationships and the literary traditions of Japanese juvenile literature of the time.
