The purpose of this course is to help students to deepen their understanding of the history of the English language.
Mainly focusing on Middle English, this course is designed as an introduction on how the English language has changed over time. By providing knowledge on the characteristics of Middle English, this course will also enable students to read and appreciate Middle English literary works.

英語に起きた歴史的変化について理解することで、現在スタンダードとされている英語がどのようなに発展し、成立してきたか、説明することができるようになる。
The purpose of this course is to help students to deepen their understanding of the history of the English language.
古英語と近代英語の間に位置する中英語の特徴について学び、英語の歴史的な変遷とその多様性について講義を行う。現在では世界中で使用される英語であるが、11世紀以降の中世イングランドでは、ラテン語やフランス語に比べ社会的地位の低い言語とみなされていた。この授業では「英詩の父」と称されたGeoffrey Chaucerの作品を中心に、英語がその社会的地位を再び向上させた中世後期の英語を実際に確認しながら、英語に起きた様々な変化を確認する。過去の英語との比較を通して現代の英語にみられる特徴を再考する。

| 授業では講義に加え、実際に古い英語で書かれたテキストを扱い、学習した内容の確認を行います。 |
各回で扱う内容の予習として、事前に指定された資料を読んで授業に参加すること。
授業では実際の中英語テクストを読むこともありますので、Oxford English DictionaryやMiddle English Dictionaryなどを用いて事前に予習をする必要があります。（これらの辞書の使用法については授業内で指示します。）
