【Course Objectives】

The goal of this course is to help students understand the history of the English language and acquire basic knowledge of Old English, which precedes Modern English. By studying the history of the English language, students will deepen their understanding of various phenomena in Modern English with insights into the development of English.

【Course Contents】

Students will learn Old English with reference to aspects of lexis, morphology, phonology, and syntax. Using the knowledge acquired about the structure of the language, students will be able to read Old English texts. The course will also analyze the historical changes in the English language via the comparison of Old English and Modern English. References related to the topic of each class will be introduced in class appropriately.
