The goal of this course is to help students understand the history of the English language and acquire basic knowledge of Old English, which precedes Modern English. By studying the history of the English language, students will deepen their understanding of various phenomena in Modern English with insights into the development of English.
Students will learn Old English with reference to aspects of lexis, morphology, phonology, and syntax. Using the knowledge acquired about the structure of the language, students will be able to read Old English texts. The course will also analyze the historical changes in the English language via the comparison of Old English and Modern English. References related to the topic of each class will be introduced in class appropriately.

本講義では、英語の歴史について理解し、現代英語の祖である古英語の基本的な知識を得ることを目標とします。英語の歴史を学ぶことで、現代英語における諸現象について理解を深めます。

古英語について、発音、文法、語彙などの側面から学び、平易な古英語文章の読解練習をします。古英語と現代英語との比較を通して、英語という言語の歴史的変化について講義を行います。また、毎回のテーマに関連する参考文献も授業で適宜紹介します。
Students will learn Old English with reference to aspects of lexis, morphology, phonology, and syntax.
