【Course Objectives】

This course introduces you to some of the well-known British detective novels and short stories written in the latter half the nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth century by studying their original texts. It will also outline the historical background to provide students with materials that will make these stories more interesting to read. It also aims to give an overview of the literary history and the origin of these ‘detective stories’ by first reading the works of Agatha Christie, and then moving on to Arthur Conan Doyle and Wilkie Collins. It also aims to provide opportunities for studying British literature and culture, and furthermore, for exploring the diversity of modern global culture and communication through the study.

【Course Contents】

The first class will be a short introduction to the whole course, and to the practice of interactive understanding of the modern global culture, so attendance is necessary. From the second week, we will start reading some of the well-known works of Agatha Christie, Arthur Conan Doyle, and Wilkie Collins. In each class we will first read a couple of extracts from the text, and then its social and historical context will be discussed. We will look at desires and anxieties of the time and the way the novelists explored their concern through their entertainment writing of mystery and detectives. Students need to read original texts and answer some questions for their own task in each class, and the result will be included in the course assessment.
