【Course Objectives】

This course explores the literary contributions of American women writers from the 19th century to the early 20th century. It will provide an overview of the literary movements, themes and styles of the period, while focusing on the works of female authors, who have been historically marginalized in the canon of American literature.

【Course Contents】

This course will focus on the female authors of the American Renaissance period, who have often been overlooked in traditional literary history. These writers, including Maria Cummins, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and Susan Warner, were "rediscovered" during the 1970s and 80s through the work of feminist literary scholars. The course will explore these authors in the context of American literary history, with an emphasis on understanding the perspectives and experiences of women during this time period, as well as the broader issues of gender and race that are present in their works.
