【Course Objectives】

The aim of this course is to help students acquire a deep understanding of sexual diversity in the U.S. and a critical ability to analyze its aesthetic as well as political aspects. This course will also cultivate a flexible mindset that perceives and contextualizes societal norms in a relative manner.

【Course Contents】

This course provides a historical survey of polyamory and its cultural repercussions in the United States. Despite our increasingly positive understanding of LGBTQ rights, polyamory remains, as it were, the last frontier of sexual diversity. In the United States, however, the idea of “extramarital affairs” could now be understood as “open marriages.” With this situation in mind, we will explore the ways in which polyamory has historically resisted the idea of monogamy (and capitalism behind it). Although the term polyamory was coined in 1990s America, its roots can be traced back to the nineteenth century. This course, then, aims to investigate diverse aspects of polyamorous culture, including philosophy, religion, literature, music, and movies.
