【Course Objectives】

The human has been able to build an advanced civilization because of its advanced cognitive functions, which include language, mathematics, drawing, and other symbol manipulation abilities. This lecture will provide an understanding of these cognitive abilities as well as the functions of the brain, the organ that makes them possible. We will also discuss higher brain dysfunction, a condition in which cognition unique to humans is impaired due to organic damage to the cerebrum.

【Course Contents】

This lecture will begin by discussing that symbols are a culture unique to humans that encompasses language, mathematics, drawing, and music. Next, the structure and function of the human cerebrum and its measurement methods will be reviewed. Neuropsychology introduces brain structure and the cognitive dysfunctions caused by brain damage, such as aphasia, apraxia, agnosia and hemispatial neglect. A wide range of topics will be offered as course content, from imitation and the mirror neuron hypothesis, to the relationship between language and working memory, to the interface between mathematics and language, to art, thought, play, and social cognition. I will talk about these topics and encourage contemplation through discussion with the audience.
