【Course Objectives】

While reading Victor Hugo's "Les Miserables", we will consider the French society and culture of the nineteenth century after the French Revolution. At the same time, we will acquire discussion and presentation skills.

【Course Contents】

We will read "Les Miserables" chapter by chapter. Since this novel is a work like a 19th century French encyclopedia in itself, we will read while delving into one historical and cultural theme each time and at the same time paying attention to the rhetoric peculiar to literary works. We deal with a wide variety of subjects, from love, social issues such as revolution and poverty, to religion in the 19th century. Every time, everyone will read the designated chapter, listen to the student's presentation about it, and then discuss it with the teacher.
