While reading French literature in the 18th century, students will understand the breadth of the study of literature, read texts, and acquire skills to write about them.
In this course, we will read literary works written during 18th-century France. We will examine the problems that were taken up by contemporary literature in 18th-century France, which is said to be the birth of modernity.

だれもが名前を覚えさせられたのに、ほとんどその著作を手に取ったことのない、けれども、西洋の近現代を理解するうえでもっとも重要な人物（のひとり）とされているルソーについて考えます。あるいはルソーとともに考えます。
「わたし」とは何か？ 「子ども」とは何か？ 「アート（芸術）」とは何か？ 「国家」とは何か？ 「自由」とは何か？ 「女性」とは何か？ こうした問いについてです。
１８世紀フランス文学（ここではジャン＝ジャック・ルソーの作品）を読みながら、文学という学問の広がりを理解し、テクストを読み、それについて書く技術を身につけます。
While reading French literature in the 18th century, students will understand the breadth of the study of literature, read texts, and acquire skills to write about them.
本講義では、１８世紀フランスを対象として、その時代に書かれた文学作品を読みます。アートもちょっとみてみます。そして、近代の誕生といわれる１８世紀フランスでは同時代の文学が何を問題としたのかを検討します。
中心に据えるのは、おそらく名前はきいたことのある思想家ジャン＝ジャック・ルソーです。『社会契約論』、『エミール』、『新エロイーズ』、『告白』などを書いた（ヘンな）人です。一般に人民主権を説いて近代を準備し、また自然教育の理論をうちたてて近代教育の扉をひらいたとされています。ほんとうでしょうか？
格差社会、「法」や民主主義、教育と子ども、「性」と恋愛、芸術や文学の危険と可能性といった諸問題について、ルソーを参照しながら考えます。とりわけ、自伝的作品について検討しながら、「わたし」とは何か、というおおきな問いについて考えます。
