Students will analyze 19th century culture and society in France by studying literatures, stage arts, and videos.
To understand 19th century France, it is critical to know 1789 French Revolution, which resulted in birth of modern civil society, and industrial revolution which brought consumer society across all Europe at about the same period, starting from England. These two revolutions riding on bandwagon of politics and economy were the powerhouse driving the turbulent 19th century in France. In this class, other than reading literatures, students will also analyze French society after the revolution by referring to bourgeoisie sub culture in this era, notably stage arts such as opera and ballet. Stratification disparities and inequality between men and women, which were behind the development of civil society during the rise of capitalism, are problems. Students will submit comment cards at the end of each class. Be aware that students will be considered absent if they fail to understand lesson contents. The following class planning is an approximate outline.

文学作品の読解，および舞台芸術，映像を通して，フランス19世紀の文化と社会を考察する。
Students will analyze 19th century culture and society in France by studying literatures, stage arts, and videos.
フランスの19世紀を理解する上で特に重要なのは，近代市民社会の誕生を画す1789年のフランス大革命と，ほぼ同時期にイギリスから始まり，本格的な消費社会をヨーロッパ全体にもたらした産業革命です。政治と経済にまたがるこの二つの「革命」が，フランス19世紀という動乱の時代を動かす原動力になっています。この授業では，文学作品の読解はもちろんのこと，この時代のブルジョワジーのサブ・カルチャーであったオペラやバレー等の舞台芸術（今年は主にバレエを扱う予定）を参照しながら，大革命以後のフランス社会について考察していきます。資本主義勃興期の市民社会の発展の陰にあった階層格差や男女間の不平等（なぜこの時代の男の主人公はみな「くず男！」なのか？）などが問題になります。毎回授業の最後にコメント・カードを提出してもらいますが、授業の内容をまったく理解していない場合は，欠席扱いとするので注意してください。なお、以下の授業計画はあくまでひとつの目安にすぎない。
