We will be doing deep readings of a folktale from several collections from the 12th and 13th century, such as the Uji Shui Monogatari and the Konjaku Monogatari Shu, where we will deepen understanding of classic literature as well as acquire the basic skills and techniques of textual investigation.
After a general overview of Middle Age folktale collections, the direction of the class will be explained. Next, presenters for each folktale will be decided, and class will proceed as a seminar. Presenters are to compare and contrast commentaries on their folktale but looking at glossaries of its terms, analyze expressions, and compare it to similar tales in their presentations. After each presentation there will be a Q & A, and through discussion we will deepen our understanding of each tale. By doing so, how to read a folktale, how to research materials, and how to present and write a paper will be learned.

12～13世紀に成立した説話集（『今昔物語集』『宇治拾遺物語』など）に収められた説話を一話ずつ精読し，各説話の魅力を読み解く．その過程で，古典文学の実態に関する理解を深めるとともに，基礎的な資料調査の方法と作法を身につける．

はじめに中世の説話集について概説し，演習の進め方について説明する．その後，各話について，発表担当者を決めて演習形式で読み進める．発表者は，諸注釈書を比較検討し，語釈，表現分析，類話との比較などを行い，その成果を発表する．発表のあとには質疑応答を行い，その討論の中で一話一話を深く読み解いていく．これらの過程で，物語の読み方，資料調査の方法，発表やレポート作成の作法を身につけることをめざす．
