【Course Objectives】

・In this course, students will consider the way people lived in ancient times through Man'yoshu, and will also review our present-day lives from the words of the Manyoshu.
・The course will also provide students with the basics of the study of ancient literature, such as the textual variants, the reading of kanji, and word annotations.

【Course Contents】

Man'yoshu, Volumes 11 and 12, are a group of poems by an unknown author, which are listed in the catalog as "Kokin Sōmon Orai Uta. Of these, 29 poems are classified as "kokin sōmon orai" in Vol. 11 and 36 in Vol. 12. In principle, two poems are paired together as two poems that were composed by two people in a chorus style. They are how the poet responds to the expression of the "question" poems. The catch-ball of words in the poem is very varied, sometimes with a change of pitch and sometimes with a direct pitch.
In this exercise, we will peruse these "question-and-answer(Somonka)" poems to decipher the ancient aspects of Man'yoshu such as the characteristics of "Somonka," the view of love, and customs of the time, from the words of the poems.
